BMW finally pulled back the curtain on its second electric vehicle after a decade, giving the world a look at its 2022 i4. This four-door sedan is the brand's first EV dedicated to everyday driving and will take on the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2. The i4's key selling point is an EPA-estimated 300-mile range and impressive power delivery.
The i4 is built on the fifth generation of BMW's eDrive EV platform, which houses the motor, power electronics, charging system and high-voltage battery. The i4 is expected to have an EV-only 0-60 time of under four seconds. BMW is also touting a low center of gravity and excellent acceleration for this new model, along with near-instant torque from its rear-wheel-drive drivetrain and a launch control feature that optimizes acceleration.
In terms of driving, the i4 will offer several modes to help drivers maximize range and performance. Efficiency mode prioritizes coasting and regenerative braking to help you get the most out of the car's battery, while Sport mode allows you to tap into the full potential of the electric motors, with their impressive torque output.
For those looking for something more fun, the M50 variant is set to hit dealerships in early 2023 and will be the first EV from bmw specs GmbH motorsport division. It's also the fastest i4 ever and will be capable of sprinting to 60 mph in under four seconds. BMW says the i4 M50 will be powered by an electric motor delivering 403 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of 155 mph.
As far as exterior design goes, the i4 is designed to be easy to identify in traffic. Its unique front and rear fascias give it a distinctive appearance, while short overhangs and a long wheelbase contribute to its impressive aerodynamic capabilities. The i4 has a drag coefficient of 0.24 for the eDrive40 model and 0.25 for the M50, which is among the lowest in its class.
Inside, the i4's cabin is a mix of sci-fi inspired features and familiar layouts that longtime BMW owners will find comfortable. The brand's iDrive infotainment system is featured on two large 14.9-inch curved displays that form more than half of the dashboard space. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are standard, and BMW's voice-activated assistant can adjust the climate control, turn on seat heaters, change radio stations and more.
BMW is still one of the few car companies to offer a full suite of driver assistance features, including lane keep assist, active cruise control and self-parking. Other amenities include heated seats, dual USB ports in the front and rear, automatic windshield wipers and a rain-sensing windshield. Despite these conveniences, the i4 has a fairly high starting price and is light on standard equipment compared to some other EVs. That may put off some buyers who are looking for a premium-feeling EV that's more affordable than the Tesla Model 3. But as BMW continues to add i4 and iX variants to its lineup, it could become a very popular choice.
